Literary Criteria for Contest Categories

POETRY

Each Poem will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Form/Style
Rhyme/Rhythm
Poetic Devices
Comprehension/Coherence
Mood/Imagery
Word Selection
Scope/Significance
Line Endings/Line Breaks
Punctuation/Spelling/Grammar
Content Realized

ESSAY / ARTICLE / TRUE STORY

15-page maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins on all four sides.
Each Essay/Article/True Story will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Creativity
Structure
Grammar, Usage, Spelling
Wow Factor: The piece show excellent use of literary techniques; grabs the reader’s attention and does not let it go until the end; is memorable and worthy of publication.

DRAMA / PLAY / SCREENPLAY

Only amateur playwrights are eligible and only one script per author will be accepted. Each script must be an original work by the entrant, and must not have been previously published or performed. Maximum of six (6) characters and 30 minute production limit.

Each play will be evaluated using the following criteria: Continuity, Story Flow, Effectively Conveys Plot on Stage through dialogue and action.

SHORT STORY

15-page maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins on all four sides.
Each Short Story will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Audience and Purpose
Organization
Elaboration
Use of Language

NOVEL

ONLY first 25-pages, plus another 5-page synopsis required, both documents double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins on all four sides. Each entire novel must be completed and available to Literary Contest Director for review, upon request.

Each Novel will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Synopsis/Conflict
Opening
Characterization
Dialogue
Description
Point of View
Storytelling Skill, Writing Technique

ALL PUBLISHED WORKS INCLUDING FICTION, NONFICTION, CHILDREN’S LITERATURE (both Board and Chapter Books), and COOKBOOKS will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Three copies of each title must accompany each entry form.

5-Prong Criteria:
Quality of Writing
Creativity and Storytelling
Book Design and Product Quality – interior and cover/jacket
Marketability of Title
Intensity and Nature of Competition within the title’s respective category

Additional published works considerations:

Children’s Literature
Separate evaluations for Board books and Chapter books. Board book evaluations include illustration, usage of color and applicable art to compliment the storyline.

Cookbooks
Personal pages and cookbook features
Originality, beauty, appeal, and utility of the cover and dividers
Variety, thoroughness, clarity, and overall appeal of the recipes
Cohesion of all book elements
