Bio and Works
Gene joined Shell Oil Company in 1956 as a treasury management trainee. After 3.5 years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Shell and in a short time, transferred into marketing. In 1976, he transferred into public relations where he remained until his retirement in 1991. During his last 12 years with Shell, he was the Public Affairs Manager, West Coast Operations.
In retirement, he established a crisis communications consulting company and finaly closed that business in 2007.
His interests turned to becoming more engaged in creative writing. His first book, Momma, Don't Ya Want Me To Learn Nothin'? was published in May 2009 by Southeast Missouri State University Press. A memoir, it covers his 'growin' up in southeast Missouri in the 40's and 50's. He currently is writing another book, adding his many short stories into a fictional novel. The book, The Elegant Mentor, was published in 2010. He is currently working on his second book of fiction, tentative title, New Madrid, which covers s reunion of three men and their wives who grew up in this rural southeast Missouri in the mid=50s, 60s and mid-70s.
He's an avid hiker, a neophyte fly fisherman and at his tender age of almost 79, has a rigid exercise and walking regimen.
His wife, Molly, after 28 years with Northern Arizona University, retired in January 2013 as the Director of Community Relations. Northern Arizona University.
