Contest Guidelines
Published Categories
- Publishing date must be 2009 or 2010, and copyright, ISBN number and publisher must be identified on the copyright page.
- Electronic books may be entered but only in printed and bound format, like a professional galley or Advance Reading Copy (ARC, book form, spiral-bound, comb binding or such) and they must include copyright date, publisher information, as well as ISBN number.
- Two copies of the published book must be provided.
- Books will not be returned but donated.
Unpublished Categories
- Entries must be unpublished. To qualify for an award, entries must remain unpublished until awards are announced inasmuch as contestants agree to consign first serial rights to the Arizona Authors Association. The Association has the right to publish the entry or an excerpt one time only in the Arizona Literary Magazine before anyone else can publish the material.
- No author's name is to show anywhere other than on the entry form.
- Except for poems, all manuscripts must be double-spaced, with 12-pitch characters and 1-inch margins on four sides.
- Title and page numbers must show on each page but no author's name anywhere on entry.
- Unpublished Novels - first 25 pages PLUS 5-page synopsis must be submitted for the entry.
- However, the entire novel must be immediately available upon request
- The first prize winners in poetry, essay, and short story categories will be entered in the PushCart Prize.
- Manuscripts will not be returned unless critiques are requested.
For All Categories
- The top three winners will be published or the author/book featured in the Arizona Literary Magazine.
- Entries will be accepted between January 1 and July 1 (postmark).
- You may enter several works. Send a separate entry form for each entry (photocopies are acceptable).
- Entries will not be returned - manuscripts will be destroyed and published books donated.
- All finalists will be notified during October.
- The judges reserve the right to switch the entry to the appropriate category. They also reserve the right to cancel a category if the number of entries is insufficient, or to decide not to have a winner if the level of the best entries is not up to Arizona Authors Association's quality standards.
- Any entry not conforming to the guidelines will be disqualified without notice. There will be no refund for disqualified entries.
